Union Berlin has made history by appointing *Marie-Louise Eta* as their new interim head coach, making her the first female head coach in the Bundesliga’s 62-year history. Eta, 34, takes over from *Steffen* *Baumgart* , who was sacked after a 3-1 defeat to Heidenheim, leaving the team 11th in the table with 32 points
A former Germany youth international and Women’s Champions League winner with Turbine Potsdam, Eta has been working as Union Berlin’s under-19s manager since July 2025 and will become the club’s women’s head coach in the summer. She previously made history as the Bundesliga’s first female assistant coach in November 2023 .
“I am delighted the club has entrusted me with this challenging task,” Eta said. “One of Union’s strengths has always been, and remains, the ability to pull together in such situations. I am convinced that we will secure the crucial points”
Union Berlin’s sporting director Horst Heldt praised Eta’s appointment, saying, “We have had a hugely disappointing second half of the season… Our situation remains precarious, and we desperately need points to stay in the league”
Her immediate task is to prepare for the next Bunderliga game against VfL Wolfsburg on April 18,2026
