The grueling 3-kilometer dawn trek for water is finally a thing of the past. Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC has officially commissioned a state-of-the-art mechanized borehole in Pwalugu, bringing an immediate end to the community’s long-standing water crisis.

The borehole, a key project under the bank’s 2025 “Power to Make a Difference” Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, was formally handed over to the community this month. It is set to serve Pwalugu and its surrounding enclaves in the Talensi District, where access to potable water has historically been a severe challenge.
Speaking at the initial sod-cutting ceremony, the District Chief Executive, John Millim Nabwomya, lauded the project as a prime example of “true and impactful CSR” aimed at boosting public health, improving sanitation, and drastically reducing waterborne diseases. Today, that vision has become a reality.

The project also directly answers a crucial plea from local leadership. Naba Ko-gbira Maatisike, Chief of Pwalugu, had previously urged the bank to dig deep enough to ensure a sustainable, year-round water supply noting that past interventions had failed because they relied on shallow boreholes that quickly dried up. Republic Bank delivered on that promise, ensuring the new system taps into a reliable, deep-ground water source.

The Pwalugu borehole is not an isolated project; it is part of a nationwide trifecta. Under its commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Republic Bank has successfully delivered three mechanized boreholes across Ghana this year: Pwalugu in the Upper East Region, Dingoni in the Northern Region and Taviefe in Volta Region.
For Managing Director Dr. Benjamin Dzoboku, these initiatives represent much more than corporate philanthropy. “These projects are a direct investment in human development,” Dr. Dzoboku emphasized, underscoring the bank’s mission to uplift marginalized communities. With clean water now readily accessible right at their doorstep, residents no longer have to make the agonizing choice between attending school, going to work, or fetching water. For the people of Pwalugu, the future is not just cleaner and healthier, it is remarkably brighter.
