Navrongo Liberty Stars have written their names into Upper East football history. The club has secured a historic qualification to the MTN FA Cup next season, a remarkable feat for a side that was playing Division 3 football just one year ago.
Liberty Stars began their story in the 2024/2025 season in the Kasena Nankana DFA Division 3 League. Playing their home games at COS Park, Navrongo, the team went through the entire campaign unbeaten under Team Manager Cherry Azanlerigu, popularly known as Coach Mboma. That dominant run earned them promotion to the Upper East Regional Division 2 League and announced them as a new force in the region.
Many expected a tough adjustment to Division 2, but Navrongo Liberty Stars had other ideas. Coach Mboma’s boys delivered another impressive campaign in front of their COS Park faithful, losing just one game Out of 14 games to Paga Crocodile Stars in the Upper East Regional Division 2 League, Zone 3, where experienced clubs such as Paga Crocodile Stars and Sirigu Super Stars compete. Their consistency, discipline, and attacking flair saw them _crowned Champions of Zone 3_, finishing ahead of more established clubs.
In the Middle League, qualifying for the MTN FA Cup is a successful season for the management of Navrongo Liberty Stars, considering it is their debut campaign at that level. The club ended their Middle League season with wins against Berekum City and Paga Crocodile Stars. They also drew with Samba Stars and lost to Bolga Soccer Masters and Zorkor United, earning them 7 points from 5 games.
For a club that was in Division 3 just last season, it is a meteoric rise that few saw coming.
Team Manager Cherry Azanlerigu “Mboma,” in an interview with GUMZANG FM 90.1, expressed his happiness that their target in the Middle League had been achieved. He added: “Navrongo Liberty Stars have set a record that is unbelievable, playing in Division 3 just a year ago and now we have qualified for the MTN FA Cup, which is a national competition. Pushing the boys out to big clubs in and outside Ghana is my target. The players and their families must also enjoy the football money, and our agents are ready to help us in this.”
