In a moving acceptance speech during the 69th Independence Day celebrations on behalf of all the awardees, Ms Sophia Akumagoa Bawa, the newly crowned Overall Best District Teacher for Talensi, a teacher of Salvation Army JHS, reminded her colleagues and the nation that the classroom remains the most critical space for national development.
Speaking on behalf of all the award recipients, Ms Sophia expressed profound gratitude for the revival of the teacher recognition program, emphasizing that teaching is a “calling” rather than just a profession.

Ms Sophia began by acknowledging the collaborative effort required to support education in the district. She extended heartfelt thanks to “all and sundry” who contributed to the success of the awards ceremony.
She thanked MP for his vision in reviving the awards program to motivate educators and DCE for his resilience and unwavering love for education in Talensi.
* Ms Sophia described Madam Christiana Azure the District Education Director as a “woman of excellence” for her exceptional leadership and performance.
“Peace in the district has gone a long way in positively affecting education,” Sophia noted, highlighting the stable environment that allows both teachers and students to thrive.
While standing on the podium as the district’s top educator, Ms Sophia was quick to share the credit with the broader teaching community. She argued that individual awards are reflections of a collective ecosystem.
“To our fellow teachers across the district, this recognition is not a sign that we have reached the peak,” she stated. “Rather, it is a call to work harder, support one another, and raise the standard. This award belongs to our entire teaching community, our mentors, our support staff, and our ever-cherished students.”
Defining the essence of the profession, Ms Sophia moved the audience with a reminder of the teacher’s true purpose. She emphasized that educators do not merely deliver a curriculum but serve as architects of human character; moving beyond textbooks to nurture the whole child, preparing students to face the challenges of the future and acting as the bridge between a student’s current circumstance and their potential.
“Teaching is a calling. We don’t just teach subjects; we foster growth, resilience, and a renewed commitment to living with passion and integrity,” she declared. “The true measure of a teacher’s success is not in the number of awards we receive, but in the lives we touch and the futures we build within our classrooms.”
The speech concluded with a pledge from the awardees to continue striving for excellence, ensuring that the “future of the nation,” which sits quietly in Talensi’s classrooms today, grows into a prosperous reality tomorrow.
