The people of Shia and neighboring communities are gearing up for an emotional and lively send-off as the final funeral rites of the late Chief *KOZUURIM KUNGAAKOLIG* begins on *15th May 2026*. Among the activities lined up, a memorial football gala will take center stage, turning the solemn occasion into one of unity, remembrance, and fanfare.

The idea came directly from the late chief’s passion for football. To honor that, organizers have arranged a two-day competition among *Shia, Gorogo, Sepaat-Buun, and Puso Namongo*, kicking off on *Sunday 17th May* at the Shia School Park which is the the third day of the funeral rites.

According to the secretary of the funeral organizing committee who also doubles as the chairman of the communication and publicity subcommittee, Hon. Paagimba Edward Tankwa on Power *sports show on *Gumzang 90.1 FM*, stated that the Gala will open with two semi-final matches on Sunday, setting the tone for what promises to be a spirited contest. The following day, Monday 18th May, the third-place match will precede the final in the evening, where one community will claim the maiden trophy.

Preparations are well underway. The committee has put security measures in place and will provide food and drinks for attendees across both days to ensure the event runs smoothly and comfortably for everyone coming to pay their respects and enjoy the games.

Hon. Paagimba also indicated that, the prizes have been kept modest to keep the focus on fun and togetherness. The winning team will take home a trophy, cash prize and a football, while the second, third and fourth placed communities will also receive cash prizes and a football each

This year’s event is just the beginning. Organizers confirmed that plans are already in motion to make the gala an annual fixture, starting with this maiden edition as a way to keep the chief’s memory alive.

Ahead of the matches, the coaches are speaking with confidence. Gorogo’s coach, *Mr. Robert Tunaba*, assured his community that they are aiming for the ultimate prize, while also appealing to well-meaning citizens of Talen Teng to support the construction of a proper Astro Turf pitch in the district. Sepaat-Buun’s coach, Mr. *Elisha Toaniyin* echoed the same fighting spirit, saying his team has prepared long and is ready to lift the trophy.

More than just a competition, the gala is meant to remind the people of Talen Teng of the late chief’s love for football and peace. It’s a way to bring communities together, ease the weight of mourning, and celebrate the values he stood for therefore all the people of Talen Teng are invited
