Hundreds of residents of Talensi District in the Upper East Region have been displaced after a heavy rainstorm that hit many parts of the district.
Properties worth millions of Ghana Cedis which includes houses, schools, business centers, economic trees and electricity poles were destroyed.

Many residents are currently homeless and are being accommodated by family and friends and the women and school children are the hardest hit.
The district has been plugged into darkness for 24 hours as a result of fallen electricity poles and installations during the rainstorm.
The District Assembly led by the chief Executive Millim Nabwomya and other officials from the Assembly including the national disaster organization visited affected communities like Gbane, Yagzore Wakii, Sheaga and Yameriga, to access the situation.
The district Assembly has relocated most of the displaced persons to safe places while evaluation and thorough assessment is being carried out by NADMO and the planning unit of the Assembly for relief and reconstruction of the destroyed properties this is because majority of the victims does not have the financial strength to fix back their ripped off roofs and fallen houses.

At the affected communities, the district Chief Executive for Talensi Millim Nabwomya has assured the victims of government support through the District Assembly and other organizations in making sure they do not live in misery.
“It is sad that this has happened and as Assembly, we have decided to immediately rush here to access the situation and render immediate help to cushion you after your loss. Natural disasters are not man made and as an Assembly we feel your pains and we shall do our best to make sure you feel comfortable”, Millim Nabwomya assured residents.
On education, many school infrastructures have been affected and for the next few weeks, academic activities will be suspended while the school structures are being worked on.
” We are much concerned about the education of the children especially the affected school children who cannot attend school for now. For this reason, reconstruction of the affected schools will start immediately and complete in time for academic activities to commence”, Talensi DCE said.
Residents and victims who spoke to Gumzangonline.com shared their frustrations going through the pain of losing properties as a result of the rainstorm.
“My family and I had to evacuate as soon as possible to our neighbor houses when we realized the house was falling down, it is God’s intervention that we are still alive today. We thank the DCE and his team for coming to our aid and we pray help will come soon so we can go back to our homes”, a victim recounted.
Victims and their families are still counting their losses while others continue to be displaced awaiting help from government and philanthropists.
